Bio-dynamic RAINFED RICE Premium Medium-Grain Brown Rice

Besides being Tasty & Nutricious our RAINFED RICE is making rice history by having the Best Sustainability Credentials in Australia!
And here’s why…

Most rice is grown in irrigated rice paddies

Irrigated rice agriculture is a big source of atmospheric methane (20 times more potent a greenhouse gas than CO2)

Southern Australian rice crops require approx. 1550 litres of pumped water for just 1kg of rice

In contrast RAINFED RICE is dryland rice. This means that it requires only natural rainfall and saves critical Australian water resources

To grow well RAINFED RICE needs:

Warm climates with high rainfall – NSW Northern Rivers area has both these attributes in abundance

Slater Farms’ RAINFED RICE is Demeter certified Bio-dynamic.

One of the most sustainable and successful forms of organic agriculture practiced across the world

Low food miles

Why Bio-Dynamic is even better than organic

Bio-dynamic farming is a deeper form of organic farming that works on the fundamental principle that the farm is a living organism.  It’s all about balancing the ecological inter- relationship of soil, plants and animals as a self-nourishing system without external inputs.

Bio-dynamic farming adheres to guidelines that are even more stringent than those required for organic certification. All artificial chemicals are excluded.

Other methods unique to the biodynamic approach include:

  • the use of fermented herbal and natural mineral preparations as soil additive sprays
  • the use of an astronomical sowing and planting calendar to optimise plant health and crop nutrition

The end result is food that is full of natural nutrition from sustainable living soils!

Slater Farm is:

  • Demeter Certified Biodynamic

Bio-dynamic Demeter farming has developed to be one of the most sustainable and successful forms of organic agriculture practiced across the world.

Both labels are used to certify high quality nutritional food produced by organic and bio- dynamic agriculture.

Slater Farm on Fairy Hill

RAINFED RICE is grown and milled on the family-owned Slater Farm in Northern Rivers, NSW.

Brett Slater, a local bio-dynamic certified farmer with a passion for innovative sustainable farming moved to organic farming practices in 1998 and converted to bio-dynamic growing in 2004. Brett grew his first crop of dryland rice in 2009. He then purchased and set up his own mill on the farm to produce an all-down-the line bio-dynamic grain.

Rice Nutrition

Northern Star 19 Aug 2010

GROWING a water-intensive crop like rice in drought-stricken regions just doesn’t make sense to Casino farmer Brett Slater, which is why he’s growing and milling his own. Mr Slater’s $500,000 mill, the first in the Northern Rivers, whirred into action this month, producing 300 tonnes of biodynamic medium-grain brown rice.
